Unique sustainable living

Earth homes stand out as a sustainable and environmentally friendly housing option. These homes are the perfect place to stay; they embody strength, sustainability, and lots of comfort.

The building process

Earth bags

First, we need to collect long, durable bags made of woven polypropylene. These are often referred to as earth bags, and they are the most important building component.

We’ll need to fill the earth bags with a mixture of locally available soil and sand. It’s important to use locally available soil because it cuts down on transportation, and reduces the overall environmental impact associated with construction. To make the walls strong, we’ll add a small amount of cement to the soil. This mixture forms the building material, ensuring that the earth bags turn into a strong and stable structure over time.

Once the earth bags are filled with the soil-cement mixture, they’ll need to be stacked on top of each other to form walls. Because the bags aren’t filled all the way, they will be malleable. This allows you to create windows and doors of your desired shape, or even curved walls like we did with one of our earth homes; Tortuga!

Together, these steps form the foundation of the construction. A few simple but important things to keep in mind, are that earth homes should always be sustainable, simple, and in harmony with the environment.

Features

The walls of earth homes are very thick and work like a heat sponge. They absorb heat during the day and slowly release it when it gets cooler at night. It's like having a cozy, natural temperature control system that helps to keep the interior cool during hot weather.

This natural process saves energy, because you need less additional energy to cool. This is not only good for your wallet, but also reduces the environmental impact associated with energy production.

The thickness of the walls also adds to the overall durability and resilience of earth homes. These structures can withstand extreme weather conditions, like high winds or even earthquakes!

Ultimately, earth homes are not only sustainable and energy-efficient but also very cozy. They are safe, durable and can be very aesthetically pleasing. Staying in an earth home is a memorable and unique experience; one you shouldn’t miss out on!
